Queen of Soul
From the time I was a young child I can recall hearing " R-E-S-P-E-C-T" from a strong voice of a woman rearing back and letting loose on the microphone. I would soon discover that this woman was brilliant in that she sang various genres, played the piano, and could sing down full packed venues. I was amazed and to say the least inspired. I have always had a love for music. I grew up loving "Freeway of Love" and "Until You Come Back to Me." May the Queen of Soul Rest in Peace. What are some of your favorite songs that Aretha sang?
As I also reflect upon her life and legacy of music, I can't help but take note that she often displayed much passion in her delivery. She did not just sing a song, she sang a song! If you get where this is going, you know I am saying she delivered something extra in her singing. She was a powerhouse who could captivate an audience with her mere presence on stage. She did not play when it came to singing. I can recall a performance within the last years where I witnessed Aretha literally throw her coat off as she sang. Did she get too hot, or was it hindering her from handling the song as she thought she needed? Regardless, it left the crowd in awe and satisfaction.
Over the next weeks I am sure there will be much talk about a bio-pic, homegoing services, and tributes in honor of Aretha Franklin. These are just a few of my thoughts. I will not go too deep but these are real thoughts. If we are talking a bio-pic, I surely think Jennifer Hudson could handle this without any question, I would even give Amber Riley credit because both do a great job at acting and singing. Final services, let us be very clear that singing is half the battle the artist need to be able to deliver. Keep in mind I am only highlighting female artists.
Homegoing services as it relates to soloist or psalmist, let us start the services with sista Yolanda Adams, followed by Avery Sunshine and Kelly Price in the middle of the program with something like Precious Lord, and to close it out sista Fantasia to do a medley of songs to conclude the services. I would even add: Amber Riley, Tina Campbell, Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
Thinking of tributes I would consider the same as listed above just be sure we are allowing some other greats like Ledisi, Tamela Mann, Jazmine Sullivan, Lalah Hathaway, and Kierra Sheard to have their way in tribute. I love music and have much respect for all vocalist and musicians, these are just my opinions. I do not claim to be an expert!
It is a pleasure to have witnessed Aretha Franklin in the time she had in this world to share her gifts. I understand she was raised in the church, and she never made her feeling about God silent. She had a work ethic that was exemplified on stage. Her legacy is music, what will be your legacy?
